Specializing in small dogs who do big things!
Diabetics, both those with Type 1 and Type 2 are in constant threat of death due to hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic reactions, also known as low and high blood sugars. Both these reactions give off chemical signals that humans cannot detect, but dogs can. Much like dogs trained to detect seizures in epileptics, dogs with a natural aptitude can be trained to do the same for diabetics. Many dogs, especially with proper training, can detect these chemical signals before they cause life threatening complications, such as; brain damage, seizures, coma, and finally death. A lot of diabetics develop a resistance to noticing the signs these reactions give off, but dogs when trained, are able to alert the diabetic that something is wrong, and then the patient can immediately check his/her blood sugars and take appropriate measures. We are also working on a training program that teaches the dogs to hit a special 911 button on a phone to call paramedics if the patient is unconscious. This could also be great for the elderly that live alone. At present we are only accepting clients locally as the program is in development.

Having worked with many dog breeds over the years ... I have a noticed many have certain talents, and all are just wonderful in their own ways ... I started with The Dog Be Good School in Aptos Calif. ... way back in 1966! Obedience training was always my main focus, but now with a daughter who is a Type One 'brittle' diabetic, I can see personally how wonderful a trained companion/helper can be, at being a buddy, and even maybe saving a life. |
